Carter Horton is a student at the same high school as Alex Browning and is among the group that boards Volée Airlines Flight 180 for a senior trip to Paris. During the premonition sequence, Carter is involved in a fight with Alex, which leads to both of them being removed from the plane, along with Alex's best friend Tod Waggner, Carter's girlfriend Terry Chaney, teacher Valerie Lewton, and students Billy Hitchcock and Clear Rivers. After the plane explodes, Carter is interrogated by FBI agents Weine and Schreck, who are suspicious of Alex. Carter remains skeptical of Alex's vision until the deaths begin. At a café, a heated argument breaks out among the survivors, and Terry, frustrated, leaves and is immediately run over by a speeding bus. Later, Carter stops his car at a train crossing to prove Alex's theory wrong. Alex, Clear, and Billy escape, but Carter is trapped in his car. Alex saves him just before the car is smashed by an oncoming train, but a piece of shrapnel from the wreckage decapitates Billy. Alex deduces that because he intervened in Carter's death, it skipped to the next person in the sequence. Six months later, Carter travels to Paris with Alex and Clear. When Alex realizes he is next in line, Carter pushes Alex out of the way of a falling neon sign, but the sign swings back toward him, implying his death as the film abruptly cuts to the end credits.
